Course Descriptions

Health Science I

In this course students explore anatomy, physiology, diseases, and disorders within human body systems. They will understand structural organization of the human body as it applies to recognizing and responding to first aid emergencies. Students engage in projects, teamwork, collaboration, and demonstration to reinforce curriculum content. They gain knowledge, skills, and industry credentials for careers in the Healthcare Professional pathway.

 

Health Science II

Prerequisite - Health Science I or PLTW Human Body Systems

In this course students understand the healthcare industry, including employability skills, cultural awareness, safety, and infection control procedures used by healthcare professionals. They develop an understanding of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems to apply knowledge and skills toward earning industry recognized credentials. Students demonstrate understanding of curriculum content through projects, collaborations, and teamwork. They gain the knowledge, skills, and credentials for careers in the Healthcare Professional pathway.

 

Biomedical Technology I

Prerequisite - Health Science I or PLTW Human Body Systems

This course challenges students to investigate trends in healthcare and research to include ethics and medicine. They explore trends in forensic medicine, infectious disease(s), and organ transplants. Students examine cell biology related to cancer and biomedical research. They gain the knowledge and skills for careers in the Biomedical Technology pathway.

 

Biomedical Technology II

Prerequisite - Biomedical Technology I

This course focuses on genetics, neurobiology, sleep disorder and biological rhythms, bioethics, the evolution of medicine, and use of technology to study cellular and molecular biology. The curriculum was developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Students will learn about careers in biotechnology within the context of the course content. Projects, teamwork, and demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that reinforce the curriculum content. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course.
