Course Descriptions

Accounting I

This course is designed to help students understand the basic principles of the accounting cycle. Emphasis is placed on the analysis and recording of business transactions, preparation, and interpretation of financial statements, accounting systems, banking and payroll activities, basic types of business ownership, and an accounting career orientation. Mathematics is reinforced and entrepreneurial experiences are encouraged.

Business Essentials

This course introduces students to topics related to business, finance, management, and marketing to cover business in the global economy, functions of business organization and management, marketing basics, and the significance of business financial and risk management. English language arts, social studies, and mathematics are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. Cooperative education is not available for this course. Apprenticeship is not available for this course. DECA (an association for Marketing Education students)  and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

Business Law

Only available for 11th - 12th grade students

This course is designed to acquaint students with the basic legal principles common to all aspects of business and personal law. Business topics include contact law, business ownership including intellectual property, financial law, and national and international laws. Personal topics include marriage and divorce law, purchasing appropriate insurance, renting and owning real estate, employment law, and consumer protection laws. English language arts and social studies are reinforced.

Business Management I

Prerequisite - Business Essentials

This course is designed to introduce students to core management concepts. The experience include how managers plan, organize, staff, and direct the business's resources that enhance the effectiveness of the decision-making process. Students will work through ethical dilemmas and problem-solving situations with customer service while applying academic and critical-thinking skills. 

English language arts are reinforced.

Business Management II

Prerequisite - Business Management I

Only available for 10th - 12th grade students

This course is designed to enable students to acquire, understand, and appreciate the significance of management to business organizations. Understanding how managers control financial resources, inventory, ensure employee safety, and protect customer service data enhances the effectiveness of their decision making. Students will work through ethical dilemmas, practice problem-solving, and enhance their teamwork skills. English language arts and mathematics are reinforced.

Entrepreneurship I

Prerequisite - Business Essentials or Marketing

Only available for 10th - 12th grade students

In this course, students evaluate the concepts of going into business for themselves and working for or operating a small business. They become acquainted with channel management, pricing, product/service management, and promotion. Emphasis is on the exploration of feasible ideas of products/services, research procedures, business financing, marketing strategies, and access to resources for starting a small business. Students will be introduced to the Lean Canvas Business Model (LCBM) throughout the course. English language arts and social studies are reinforced.

 

Entrepreneurship II

Prerequisite - Entrepreneurship I

Only available for 10th - 12th grade students

In this course, students continue the development of a business idea and develop an understanding of pertinent decisions to be made for business positioning, financing, staffing, and profit planning. Students acquire in-depth understanding of business regulations, risks, management, and marketing and will develop a business plan. English language arts, mathematics, and social studies are reinforced.

 

Marketing

Prerequisite - Business Essentials

This course is designed to introduce students to the dynamic processes and activities in marketing. The experience includes students developing and understanding and skills in the areas of distribution, marketing-information management, market planning, pricing, product/service management, promotion, and selling. Students also develop an understanding of marketing functions applications and impact on business operations. English language arts, mathematics, and social studies are reinforced.

Sports and Event Marketing I

Prerequisite - Business Essentials or Marketing

Only available for 10th - 12th grade students

In this course, students are introduced to sport and event industries. Students will develop an  understanding of marketing, branding, promotion, media, and marketing data as they relate to the sport and event industries.

Sports and Event Marketing II

Prerequisite - Sports and Event Marketing I

Only available for 10th - 12th grade students

In this course, students will apply their knowledge of promotion and marketing for the sport and event industries. The topics to be covered are the marketing environment, promotional activities, communications, product-mix strategies, and financial and economic impacts.
